Ghostly figure sprites
Ghostly figure sprites
Red sprites are a rarely captured upper atmospheric phenomena found above strong lightning strikes. They are a massive and intricately shaped breakdown of the upper atmosphere, colored red because of the fact that nitrogen is excited by the electrical energy. Since their discovery in 1989, we have been slowly peeling away at their mystery with each new capture.
I have been hunting and shooting sprites since 2017, and this stands out as a really unusual capture of figure-shaped sprites over the Colorado/ Kansas border in August 2023. To me, they form a group of figures, reminiscent of a cave painting. Maybe our ancestors were trying to tell us what they saw in the skies in the times before light pollution?
To highlight the scale, keen eyes can pick out three tiny lightning bolts on the horizon. One is the parent stroke of the sprite complex - the one that caused the cloud to glow in a sunrise-like manner. Such amazing power at work. The physics of this particular sprite would be unusual. They mostly formed in a cloudward direction instead of firing both ways from height. Little is understood about why they could form this way, but we get closer to figuring it out all the time.
