In Texas, you can still find some pristine dark skies with landscapes that enjoy a thick blanket of blackness at night, much like they did when humans first laid eyes on them.
It is here that I find tremendous peace, solitude, and an ability to reflect on the true beauty of nature and the planet around us.
And, it is here that the skies come alive like nowhere else during storms.
This Red Sprite complex flashed up in the sky for less than a second over a sweeping fall storm system in central Texas. A truly awesome scene that flashed in the corner of my eye and had me hurrying to my camera to see what had just happened.
I was completely blown away when I saw this on the back of the screen.
These sprites were the most intense I caught this night and were reasonably close. They would have been very clear to the naked eye. These are the events that make me wonder about who would have seen sprites and how they would have reacted back in the day. It is rare to get such large events up close, and the population was far smaller back then, so there would have been very few people having seen this.... but not zero...
Note the green ghosts at the top of two of the elements, the purple lower tendrils, and the troll jets in the center and to the left. All indicative of an extremely powerful and unique event.
