Rare positive Gigantic Jet over Kansas

This is a shot of one of the most amazing and elusive events in nature. A gigantic jet- or in this case a positively charged gigantic jet. These jets form as modified leaders from a bolt of lightning that exits the top of the cloud and reaches towards the ionosphere. Imagine all the charge in a really active storm being concentrated in the upper cloud tops and forming a super bolt pointing upwards. The energy that is discharged is incredible, exciting nitrogen in this crazy fountain-shaped jet, that reaches over seventy kilometers up to the lower ionosphere.

Gigantic jets are a real rarity to find in the United States. They are a phenomenon usually found in coastal regions and in the tropics. Even there, positive gigantic jets like this are hardly ever captured. Conditions were prime for them that night over northern Kansas, and I captured a total of four, all of which have been analyzed for a future journal paper.
